'Dawn' by Sean Whelan
4 colour hand-pulled screen print.
500 x 700mm / on 300gsm Munken Pure paper. Edition of 10, signed and numbered by the artist.
Seán Whelan painted directly onto thick acetate sheets to create this 4 colour screenprint - part of an ever expanding collection of prints which Seán has been working on over the course of the last year.
These prints have largely all been made using the same approach; painted by hand using hog bristle brushes and tar-like ink commonly used by graffiti artists.
The works serve as a glimpse into the artist's memory, a story of a specific morning that has been picked apart and loosely pieced together again.
About the Project
Our group collection 'Dawn' was put together at during the latter stages of 2020, calling on our Damn Fine Print members, to each respond to the theme of "Dawn" through their respective approaches to printmaking.
About the Artist
Seán Whelan is an artist, printmaker, and recent graduate of NCAD, Dublin. Sean's bold style captures the energy of quick mark-making, creating his prints from handmade film positives and embracing the textures and lines of the print process.
Drawing inspiration from that which is close to him, Seán’s work is autobiographical. From struggles with both mental health issues and with physical injury, to issues of alcohol and substance abuse and his formative years during adolescence - the work is depicted using light, playful, and often humorous imagery.
Seán’s work serves as a means of diarying his own personal tribulations. The work is an effort to capture a sense of dis-ease, of paranoia, a sense of being broken/fractured and of being trapped.
Frames can be purchased through Damn Fine Print in black, white and natural wooden finishes. Bespoke framing is also available.
