About the Piece
An ode to two icons of electricity – HAL 9000, and the body of work that Jacob Jensen did for Bang & Olufsen. The high-end bling of minimalist product design in beautifully engineered materials he designed seemed like a dip into the future in the 1980’s. These pieces are a celebration of the luminescence of fluo ink on white paper, and the contrast of metallic and gloss ink to flat/matt layers.

About the Artist

Robyn Carey is a printmaker, painter, and curator from Dublin.  She creates primarily abstract expressionist silk screen prints and acrylic paintings. Her work at its core is an exploration of relationships, both physical, mental, and theoretical. She explores this through expressive, gestural mark-making coupled with abstracted structures.  Robyn's work often reflects her interpretations of a scientific, philosophical, or historical theory. Aesthetically she is drawn to both ancient Irish neolithic imagery and textures, contrasted by clean lines of modernism. Her work aims to grab the viewer's attention with its strong imagery and compositions.  It then asks them to delve a little deeper upon a closer look, to unearth a narrative being depicted through abstraction and symbolism. Her practice is based in Pallas Projects Studios, Dublin 8.

Joe is a printmaker and graphic designer based in Dublin by way of Canada. A reverence for trees led to a career in arboriculture before pursuing graphic design. His work is inspired by visual language and who’s listening to it and the shared experience of pleasure from it.

“Promise me, Red. If you ever get out, find that spot. In the base of that wall, you'll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. A piece of black, volcanic glass. There's something buried under it I want you to have.”

A relation of  ‘Gabion’, prompted by the incongruous rock in ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, and the treasure hidden within that wall.

About the Artist
Stéphanie is a French native who has lived in Ireland since 2016. She moved to Dublin in 2018 from the Wild Atlantic Way to be in a city surrounded by artists pursuing their dreams. Stéphanie is passionate about the intense contrasts she has witnessed in the Irish landscape. 'Dublin' is the third series of screen prints produced at Damn Fine Print in Stoneybatter, Dublin. The Printmaker and Illustrator wishes to share the beauty of our world through minimal composition and vivid colours. This illustration was inspired by her daily life. O'Connell Street is a meeting point, the centre of this busy and noisy city, where tourists and locals regularly cross paths and umbrellas keep flying. This hand-craft print medium is an opportunity to highlight the details of the original artwork made by collages and to stay true to the dynamics, feelings and energy of the actual scene.

’Sugar Town – II’

About the Piece
The second of a pair of large landscape pieces that celebrate the painterly possibilities of screen print. The process applied in creating these is a hybrid one, involving initial artwork composition on digital tablet, then using near pairs of painted inks with paintbrushes within those screens, and modifying the proportions of acrylic base to adjust translucency of the layers to build up painted-like qualities to the elements. The initial inspiration was the large landscape mural by William Scott in the Altnagelvin hospital in Derry. The loose arrangement of simple/geometric forms, and the horizontal rhythm of alternating brash and subtle shifts in the ‘landscape’ of the canvas. The name is shamelessly stolen form the 1966 Nancy Sinatra pop number, with it’s ode to LSD on sugar cubes. The palette had evolved into confectionary territory, so I just went with the flow. Each print is unique, with different quality of brushstroke and ink mixes.

These are the result of describing a pictorial scenario to an AI image generator, and then taking the partially rendered, and consequently soft, image into the analogue process of hand screen print. The luminous RGB gamut is translated into fluoro inks, and the image manipulated to best suit screen print reproduction. Rather than being a readymade, it’s a not-readymade. The trees don’t exist – they’re from the ‘imagination’ of the code – but imaginings that have not been allowed fully formulate. The challenge of taking soft elements into a medium generally known for it’s hard-edged capabilities also appeal to my contrary nature.

"Note that there’s a subtle squeegee mark above and slightly left of the tree (see attached pic). It’s not particularly noticeable, and a consequence of the imperfect nature of hand screen printing. If, however, it’s going to be problematic for you, don’t buy the piece – you’ve been fore-warned."

The prints cover an area 260 x 260mm, and are on A3 paper, but if you prefer them cut down to 420 x 420mm for mounting, just let me know in your order notes, and I’ll do so. Alternatively you can cut them down yourself!

About the Artist
We first saw Jack’s work at his degree show in IADT, Dun Laoghaire, where he showed an impressive dedication to precision and craft. Jack’s prints are a result of an attention to detail and an embrace of beautiful printing which caught our eyes immediately. He was invited to take part in an internship in our studio and has been a member of Damn Fine Print since, continuing to produce these highly impressive and individualistic works while exploring and expanding on his style.

'AI Tree Precursor' by Alastair Keady

About the Piece
A first outing on studies relating to migrating AI compositions to the analogue screen print medium. A partially rendered AI opposition I dictated is grabbed while not yet fully resolved, to retain the soft focus aspect. The image is then reworked to reproduce in a faux process colour print, with yellow and magenta replaced with fluorescent green and pink, and a unique monoprint layer is used in the sky. A grid of evolving square-to-circle forms is then superimposed and gilded with faux silver leaf.

About the Piece
A celebration of colour and design, we created this calendar as a studio companion for creatives, print lovers and anyone interested in pagan Irish dates and seasons.

As well as all the colour and detail we could squeeze into it, this 2023 calendar includes key dates and Irish-language translations from the old Gaelic calendar.

Riso printing is always an experiment, and this project really showcases what can be achieved when we embrace the restrictions of this antiquated machine and play with colour in search of that magical 'what might be' moment.

These little guys are just having a nice time together. Nothing too spicy, just a little warm. Strong gradients and bold shapes are something consistent in my work and give a solid place for these guys to hang out in.
