About the Project
These sprang from my work on wood panels, where the forms butted up against the edges of the panels. I wanted to do a companion edition, but with the composition floating within a space. I also wanted to explore the combination of relatively loose gestural lines within a tight geometric composition, with subtle tonal shifts. The combination of teal/green and gold got me thinking of the visual language of currency, and the title arrived as a play on that. The gilded form is a mixture of faux gold leaf and bronzed powder gold pigment, and has a lot of textural interest on it’s own. Intended to be float mounted in a larger frame, but can equally be trimmed to mount in a 70 x 50 cm frame.

About the Project
“Promise me, Red. If you ever get out, find that spot. In the base of that wall, you'll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. A piece of black, volcanic glass. There's something buried under it I want you to have.”

A relation of  ‘Gabion’, prompted by the incongruous rock in ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, and the treasure hidden within that wall.

About the Artist
Sometimes it’s hard to know what direction to go. One time I jumped into deep dark water and suddenly forgot which way was up and which was down. Frantic underwater cartwheels couldn’t pick out the beams of light. Sometimes it’s like that.
Hand lettering was traced from collage, textures run through photocopiers and grids made with cut up math paper.
 
About the Artist
Karen began screen printing many years ago in order to make merchandise for her bands, leading her to work as a print studio technician, commercial printer and tutor alongside her visual arts practice.

Karen has been exhibiting since 2012 in group and solo contexts. Her most recent solo
exhibitions were Loose on the Streets in The Darkroom, September 2022, Scurrying Things, Kenilworth Ln Studios, April 2022, and Fragments, Damn Fine Print, February 2020.

Karen is a multidisciplinary artist working across fine art print, moving image, audio and installation. Karen is currently completing an artist residency Future Labs with DAS Belfast and has recently completed a residency at The Darkroom, D7. Karen is a current recipient of the Arts Council Bursary and a previous recipient of the Arts Council Agility Award.

About the Artist
Stéphanie is a French native who has lived in Ireland since 2016. She moved to Dublin in 2018 from the Wild Atlantic Way to be in a city surrounded by artists pursuing their dreams. Stéphanie is passionate about the intense contrasts she has witnessed in the Irish landscape. 'Dublin' is the third series of screen prints produced at Damn Fine Print in Stoneybatter, Dublin. The Printmaker and Illustrator wishes to share the beauty of our world through minimal composition and vivid colours. This illustration was inspired by her daily life. O'Connell Street is a meeting point, the centre of this busy and noisy city, where tourists and locals regularly cross paths and umbrellas keep flying. ‘AI Tree #2’

About the Piece
These are the result of describing a pictorial scenario to an AI image generator, and then taking the partially rendered, and consequently soft, image into the analogue process of hand screen print. The luminous RGB gamut is translated into fluoro inks, and the image manipulated to best suit screen print reproduction. Rather than being a readymade, it’s a not-readymade. The trees don’t exist – they’re from the ‘imagination’ of the code – but imaginings that have not been allowed fully formulate. The challenge of taking soft elements into a medium generally known for it’s hard-edged capabilities also appeal to my contrary nature.

"Note that there’s a subtle squeegee mark above and slightly left of the tree (see attached pic). It’s not particularly noticeable, and a consequence of the imperfect nature of hand screen printing. If, however, it’s going to be problematic for you, don’t buy the piece – you’ve been fore-warned."

The prints cover an area 260 x 260mm, and are on A3 paper, but if you prefer them cut down to 420 x 420mm for mounting, just let me know in your order notes, and I’ll do so. Alternatively you can cut them down yourself!

'Niamh' by Sinéad Killoran

About the Piece
‘Niamh’ is a more refined, stylised and considered print opposed to Sinead’s usually freehanded approach. However, her textured, abstract style is definitely still present. The pieces come as a response to Sinéad’s recent move from Dublin to London. “I’m a combination of excited and nervous. This edition is an expression of home, family and friends, featuring Irish motifs of silver and copper leaf and a colour grid that is reminiscent of my home and of our history"

Sinéad Killoran is a Dublin based artist who mainly works though the medium of screen, she uses escapism in her art through energetic mark-making, exploring textures and patterns. Sinead is very experimental with her prints often seen using lots of layers mixing monoprinting with digital imagery and hand embellishments, she creates free yet considered work.

'Drop’ by Alastair Keady

1400 x 1010mm screen monoprint diptych. Four and five layers respectively, on 290gsm Sirio Arancio and 250gsm black papers. Hand cut paper stencils used as masks for the monoprinted sections. Orange, black, burned orange, rust, neutral grey, and gold. Edition of three unique pieces.

About the Piece
Following on from the formal studies of conjoining square and circular motifs in the ‘Module’ pieces. This piece is looser, more painterly, and has a defined compositional arrangement. It’s also considerably larger! The process is resolutely exploratory, somewhere in the crossover of print/painting/collage, embraces the consequent accidents and inconsistencies of the handmade, and allows a generous scale that brings the interplay of colour and tone to the fore.

One of nine Allsorts editions. Bertie Bassett meets Kenneth Noland. There’s an often-overlooked, but interesting compositional and colour structure in confectionary. These pieces offer an opportunity to present a reductive contemplation on those structures. flat matt colours on uncoated stock, with liquorice elements printed in a semi-gloss sheen black ink.

About the Project
A companion piece to the ‘Dresser’ prints, this is a bolder composition, leaning heavily on the implied level surface (Mantel) at the base of the chaotic main square. The square compositional motif is accentuated by ‘outlining’ the orange square with a metallic grey ‘sprayed’ square. “It’s like, how much more square could this be? And the answer is none; none more square.” Note – there’s variation in the black strokes on the prints – the top left hand corner stroke end has less or more ink from print to print.

C3PO and R2D2 are back, this time engaged in some sort of heated, orange, conversation.

‘Dresser – blue’

About the Project
Continuing on with studies around square and circular forms, this piece is inspired by the Irish Country Dresser. Dressers were/are not only the home, and stage, for display crockery, but sometimes for chickens or other fowl, in the cosy base of the dresser, with straw bedding. The idea of compartmentalised modular elements, strange bedfellows, and preciousness led to this composition.

About the Project

About the Artist
Izzy Rose Grange is a Dublin based artist and printmaker. She holds a BA in Fine Art Printmaking from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and has been creating work experimenting with integration and interaction with the sea for a number of years. Her work mainly consists of dynamic compositions which create parity between shifting geometric structures and photographic representations of the sea. This work explores tension and emotion, and plays on the calm yet powerful presence of nature.

About the Artist
Alastair is a graphic design graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art. He’s worked as a designer, and design educator, for far too long to dwell on. Interested in process and materiality in printmaking, he’s previously worked in letterpress, but returned to screen printing in 2017.

Often found devising an image-making technique, and then discovering ways to undermine, abuse, and subvert it. Loves a happy accident. Disinterested in rigorous adherence to consistency in a world of perfect reproduction. Which is convenient. Also a noted pedant.

Damn Fine Print proudly presents a new collaboration with leading Irish contemporary artist Niall de Buitléar.

The work comprises three abstract screenprints, created in de Buitléar’s unique style through an intricate combination of hand drawing and print.

While at first glance these works are mesmerisingly simple, further inspection reveals a complexity and intricate detail that has become a calling card of de Buitléar’s creations.

Describing his process, the artist tells us: “My work involves the ongoing development of an abstract vocabulary through the layering and repetition of simple forms into more complex structures. 

“Drawing is central to my work and is the basis for the development of each piece. I am interested in how ideas that begin with drawing can flow into other media and how one drawing can be interpreted differently in multiple media, in both two and three dimensions. 

“In my two-dimensional work repeated lines create a sense of rhythm and movement, in a sculpture those same lines become the cut edges of stacked materials creating three-dimensional structures.”

All three prints are designed in such a way that they can be framed and hung as a collection or as individual pieces.

He has participated in two-person exhibitions at the Wexford Arts Centre and Queen Street Studios, Belfast.

'Mind Each Other' by Fuchsia Macaree

About the Project
Made as a response to the protests and conversations about race taking place around the world, this print encourages us to take a moment to check in with and support each other. If we put our collective energy into educating ourselves, examining our own behaviour, having difficult conversations with each other and donating funds, we can help at least a little bit. 50% of profits will go to the Irish Refugee Council, who support people in the asylum process and people who have been granted refugee status in Ireland.

About the Artist
Fuchsia is an illustrator interested in human interaction and capturing small moments, who enjoys working with solid blocks of colour and simple shapes. Her soft, bold illustrative style translates beautifully to screen printing, and we have been delighted to collaborate with Fuchsia on a number of projects.

'Climbing the Walls - Part i' by Neil Dunne

About the piece.
Neil Dunne’s response to lockdown and the Covid 19 pandemic featuring his unique style, colours and distinctive urban aesthetic to examine his current situation. His usual inspiration of a busy city landscape is gone and he's left to pick apart, make fun of and even find joy in feelings of containment and imposed isolation.

The series, Climbing The Walls, draws influence from the built environment and the ghosts of imagined city spaces to leave an exciting visual complex for the audience that proudly looks outwards and upwards during a time of cocooning and lockdown. 

About the Artist
Neil Dunne's work engages with issues related to the built environment and personal experience. Employing a diverse range of mediums and aesthetic strategies – including drawing, painting and printmaking – his examination of the cultural and social setting found within the urban landscape portray a sense of stasis -  capturing the fragility of a moment. Neil works with a concept of print in mind, utilising his skills in silkscreen printing and takes advantage of an expanded print practice.

About the print
His work here, entitled ‘MARE’,  is a four-colour silkscreen on 300gsm Somerset paper inspired by equestrian painter George Stubbs’ beautiful ‘Whistlejacket’ painting.

Dunne takes the original image and drags it through a heavy process of disintegration and editing. The print explores a Dublin identity, the original subject matter is enveloped within the context of contemporary socio-political issues. The horse itself, a statement of beauty and nature, has a distinctly Dublin setting subverting the original painting and its context.

About the artist

Dunne's work highlights the significance of the artistic process by representing cultural and social ideologies. Much of his work is realised through canvas and there is a focus on the silkscreen medium. The exploration of identity through his creative process is a central theme to his practice, highlighting a distinct Dublin rhetoric. His work appears in various collections including the OPW, UCD, The Devlin, HKOP and some private collector.
Dunne graduated with an MFA from the National College of Art and Design. He works from Pallas Projects and Damn Fine Print and is based in Dublin, Ireland.

Welcome was the first solo exhibition of work by illustrator and printmaker Conor Nolan. The show is a celebration of the everyday, taking an illustrative approach to documenting some of the people and parts of Dublin that have stood out to Conor over this time.

“If I had to describe Nolan’s work to someone without any images at hand, I’d say it had the whimsy and heart of Quentin Blake, with the graphic and colour sensibilities of Saul Bass and Corita Kent, somehow managing that magic trick of being calming and vibrant at the same time. The artworks walk a tightrope between the past and the present, telling the small stories of life in Dublin through Nolan’s eyes.” Leonie Connellan, for Headstuff.
