‘Verdant’ by Alastair Keady

About the Piece
'Verdant' is another piece in my collection of AI Trees series. These are the result of describing a pictorial scenario to an AI image generator, iterating and modifying the outcomes until something magic happens, and then taking that into the analogue process of hand screen print, after reworking the composite process layers into something new. The luminous RGB gamut is translated into fluoro inks, and the image manipulated to best suit screen print reproduction. The goal here, is to create a composition, and textural qualities that are difficult to assign to a particular technique or process. The resulting ambiguous outcomes are abstract, but anything but arbitrary. Layers of shifting fluoro-amplified green ink are built up to create a carefully crafted alien Rorschach, but made of re-imagined foliage.

About the Artist
Alastair is a graphic design graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art. He’s worked as a designer, and design educator, for far too long to dwell on. Interested in process and materiality in printmaking, he’s previously worked in letterpress, but returned to screen printing in 2017.

Often found devising an image-making technique, and then discovering ways to undermine, abuse, and subvert it. Loves a happy accident. Disinterested in rigorous adherence to consistency in a world of perfect reproduction. Which is convenient.

'Drop’ by Alastair Keady

1400 x 1010mm screen monoprint diptych. Four and five layers respectively, on 290gsm Sirio Arancio and 250gsm black papers. Hand cut paper stencils used as masks for the monoprinted sections. Orange, black, burned orange, rust, neutral grey, and gold. Edition of three unique pieces.

About the Piece
Following on from the formal studies of conjoining square and circular motifs in the ‘Module’ pieces. This piece is looser, more painterly, and has a defined compositional arrangement. It’s also considerably larger! The process is resolutely exploratory, somewhere in the crossover of print/painting/collage, embraces the consequent accidents and inconsistencies of the handmade, and allows a generous scale that brings the interplay of colour and tone to the fore.

‘Powerscourt 1945’ by Alastair Keady

About the Piece
Last year my mother asked me if I would like some old gold leaf she had inherited (my grandfather was a gardener in various estates over the years). She said it had been surplus to a gilding job on the gates in the Powerscourt estate, in north Wicklow. I said I was very interested, but I would come back to her when I had a plan for it. I noted it was wrapped in some yellowed newspaper, but didn’t pay much attention at the time. I assumed it was probably early seventies in vintage.

Months go by, and I finally resolve to do a piece that alludes to the source of the gold. I ask to see the package, to gauge how much gold leaf is actually usable, and discover the actual age of the newspaper, and gold – 1945! The war is still underway in the Japanese held islands. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are a month away. Myles na nCopaleen / Flann O’Brien is writing in less than respectful style about the investiture of new President Seán T. O’Kelly. I feel bad about the destruction of this little package of ephemera, but it’s sat in a drawer for nearly eighty years, and will do so again, unless it’s re-introduced to the world as part of print.

So… I’ve tried to coalesce the spirit of the late ’40s with the visual language I like to work with in 2022. There’s a lot going on here – ten layers of ink – including two layers of hand painted monoprint greenery, loose sketched interpretation of the Bamberg gate – which I’ve decided was likely to have been one of the Powerscourt gates to recieve the gilding makeover in 1945. An overlay of a documented, and gilded section of the gate, that runs right to the deckled edge of the print. I aimed to use the entire remaining stash of gold leaf in the edition, which ended up, after pruning out the inevitable casualties of a ten layer print, to 16 in total. It’s a special piece – obviously a one-off, and one where I let myself be led by the process, and responded to the givens of the artifacts, the gardens, the history, and the preciousness of the material. The print is intended to be float mounted in an A3-or-larger box frame, but YMMV (it’d probably benefit from a slightly larger frame, but I went with A3 in the pictured version) . Newspaper clipping subject matter is pot luck, but they’re all captivating little messages from a moment that resonates in history. Thanks Ma!

About the Piece

This print was a combination of collage elements to form the final piece. The inspiration for this print came from my long walks at dusk during summer evenings within the county-side of Kildare. The bright colours represent a sense of calmness and prosperity. 

About the Artist

Seán is recent graduate of University College Cork with a masters in secondary school teaching. He describes himself as an Artist teacher. In his artwork, he likes to capture the beauty in mundane objects and places. His work is based on combined materials such as car steel through what he understood to be of the Male Vernacular. Screen-print allows Seán to reference car culture and nostalgia, as well as the sense of a journey. It allows sean to make the illusion of movement on paper, whilst distorting the image. Seán uses bright colours to reference a sense of play and the advertisements that appeared on big billboards and newspapers within the 80s and 90s. His Artwork includes elements of automobile language, vinyl, spray paint, glass, photography, metal, maps, air fix and structural parts, all being a direct reference to the car industry as a whole. This adds up to much more than the simple process of getting to A to B. His work evokes prospects of escape from the weight of collective and material responsibilities.

About the Artist
Stéphanie is a French illustrator who lives in Ireland. On her arrival she settled in the West, in the village of Leenane in Connemara. She moved to Dublin in 2018 to be in a city surrounded by artists chasing their dreams. She is passionate about the vibrant colours and intense contrasts she witnessed in Irish landscapes. Available in six colourways, with a cheeky singular yellow and gold variation, there’s a remix banger to suit all tastes – as long as they find drippy glitter tasteful. Note that this will draw the disco line to a close. I’ve learned my lesson with doubling up on the glitter for screen print – I won’t be rushing back into that minefield. Burn, baby, burn!

'Peace' A3 Risograph Print by Alastair Keady.

A print project to raise funds for the Ukrainian Red Cross as they work to help civilians, rescue workers and refugees after Russia's invasion of the country.

Please Note
This is a different version of this print to our previous fundraiser, at a smaller size and printed using risograph printing rather than screen printing. We've done our best to ensure the very high quality of our first print, with the artist adding some textures to the design that we felt were suited to the risograph process and set this print apart from its screen-printed predecessor.

About the Project
Each print is being sold for €40 with proceeds then donated to the Ukraine Red Cross.

The print depicts a dove with an olive branch in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, with the Russian/Ukrainian word for peace "мир" written below.

The design has been created by artist and Damn Fine Print member Alastair Keady.

All proceeds from sales of this print will be donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross, who are working across the country providing first aid, evacuation assistance, food, medicine and more to those affected.
