About the Piece
Yoke is a response to the quality of ink on this Ancona paper. The ink tends to sit n the surface, and consequently develops a tactility when layered. I was interested in exploring the translucency of metallic layers with opaque underlays, and building painterly stokes as tactile elements. It’s also another opportunity to work with squares and circles, which is an ongoing formal playground for my pieces.
This version uses a halftone screened gild on top of the printed gold, so there’s various tonal shifts as the light moves over it, or as you move around it.
About the Artist
Alastair is a graphic design graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art. He’s worked as a designer, and design educator, for far too long to dwell on. Interested in process and materiality in printmaking, he’s previously worked in letterpress, but returned to screen printing in 2017.
Often found devising an image-making technique, and then discovering ways to undermine, abuse, and subvert it. Loves a happy accident. Disinterested in rigorous adherence to consistency in a world of perfect reproduction. Which is convenient.
