About the Project

Summer palette for a summer day. Continuation on from the compositional studies of the ‘Knot’ prints.

The names of these three pieces derive from their original placeholder ’not-a-gravestone’ title. It got me thinking about the role of gravestones in popular culture, and then specifically the climactic graveyard duel in Sergio Leone’s ’The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’. The character of Tuco the bandito seemed to match the vibrancy of the palette used in these pieces, and plants the soundtrack of B.A.D’s ‘Medicine Show’ in my head while printing.

“Wanted in 14 counties of this state, the condemned is found guilty of the crimes of murder, armed robbery of citizens, state banks, and post offices, the theft of sacred objects, arson in a state prison, perjury, bigamy, deserting his wife and children, inciting prostitution, kidnapping, extortion, receiving stolen goods, selling stolen goods, passing counterfeit money, and contrary to the laws of this state, the condemned is guilty of using marked cards and loaded dice. Therefore, according to the power invested in us, we sentence the accused here before us, Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez ... known as the Rat ... and any other aliases he might have, to hang by the neck until dead. May God have mercy on his soul. Proceed.”

About the Artist
Alastair is a graphic design graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art. He’s worked as a designer, and design educator, for far too long to dwell on. Interested in process and materiality in printmaking, he’s previously worked in letterpress, but returned to screen printing in 2017.

Often found devising an image-making technique, and then discovering ways to undermine, abuse, and subvert it. Loves a happy accident. Disinterested in rigorous adherence to consistency in a world of perfect reproduction. Which is convenient.
